From the Publisher It's appropriate that our final issue of the century focus on responsible travel. Way back in the 70's, Transitions Abroad was the first national magazine to regularly gather and publish information on overseas travel that respects the local culture and environment. This time our emphasis is on community-based travel options — in Namibia, Mexico, and around the world in our expanded annual directory of Responsible Travel Resources and Programs. Our other focus this time is Africa — or at least a small part of it. Most of us think of an African wildlife safari in terms of drivered Landrovers and expensive game lodges. Anne Loxton, who lives in Namibia, writes about economical camping safaris where guests stay in Bushman villages. Visitors not only learn about daily lives but contribute to their economy. Other kinds of immersion travel are described by Roger Leibovitz (homestays in Slovenia), Rachel Schneller (busing in West Africa), and Daniel Andrzejek (bicycling in developing countries). Our colorful and newly redesigned January/February 2000 issue will focus on Jobs Abroad — where they are and how to get them. My wife, Joanna, and I will report on food and wine touring in Italy and we'll also welcome a new columnist, Ron Mader, who will introduce a regular column on life in Latin America. Until then, happy 2000 wherever you are! — Clay Hubbs
