              Responsible Travel Programs

Traveling responsibly means respecting the natural and cultural environment of the places we visit, taking the time to appreciate the importance of what others have to tell us. People-to-people travel has perhaps never been more important than now.

The organizers whose tours and programs are described here have pledged to make travel a learning experiencenot another form of consumptionthat benefits the host as well as the visitor. Learn from experienced teachers about the sacred traditions of Asia or the natural history of the Galapagos Islands; learn from South Africans about their economic, political, and social realities; work with leading scientists on field research projects worldwide. . . .

As we prepare to go to press less than two weeks after the attacks we are still, like so many others, in a state of near shock. Next time our editorsall of whom seem to agree that violence only leads to greater violence and that travel is, as Rick Steves says, a huge unifier, perhaps more important than everwill offer a practical guide to travel in the post-September 11 world. Meanwhile, here are some early responses. More of their Travel Now! comments are scattered throughout this issue.

My big fearand the consensus I feel among Italians and fellow countrymen here on the roadis that America will respond to this tragedy by seeking revenge. Passions combined with 21st-century weaponry makes such a frightening mix that it's too dangerous for any nation to act as the 'world's only superpower. We are a family of nations.

People are understandably worried on a practical level, but they must know that increased security will make air travel over the coming months and years far safer than it has ever been.
