Michele Peterson is a Toronto-based freelance writer specializing in travel, outdoor adventure and food. A member of the Travel Media Association of Canada, she is also on staff at Canada’s largest environmental justice organization so her writing often reflects a commitment to sustainable tourism. Born in the northern mining town of the Flin Flon and raised on the prairies, she spent 14 years at Canada’s largest mutual fund company where she was the first female Vice-President in the male bastion of the Investment division. Being the only woman meant she took the trophy for Best Lady Golfer — until another woman joined the team. Her team achieved a record-breaking $750 million in annual sales.
Shortly after 9-11 and a lengthy volunteer assignment at a women’s cooperative in Honduras with Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO), she left the corporate world for the non-profit sector and served as a consultant in Bolivia, Russia, Guatemala and Canada. She also took her first travel writing course — at the University of Toronto — followed by Ryerson University and the Taos Writer’s Workshop in New Mexico. Unsparing in discipline and reliability, she enjoys writing about the unexpected and unusual — whether coca leaf readers in Bolivia or snorkeling with beluga whales in Hudson Bay. Her articles have appeared in the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, Dreamscapes, Air Canada onAir, the Boston Herald, VIA Rail, Homemakers as well as several anthologies.
